Isle of Capri Cape Girardeau wins Award of Excellence
The Structural Engineering Association of Northern California (SEAONC) and the Structural Engineering Association of California (SEAOC) presented an Award of Excellence in New Construction to the Isle of Capri Cape Girardeau. This casino complex was built in Cape Girardeau, a college community on the banks of the Mississippi River in southeastern Missouri. The site is in the zone of influence of the New Madrid Fault system and is subject to frequent earthquakes which cause sand boils and liquefaction in a major earthquake. The structural engineer, Gregory P. Luth Engineers, provided state-of-the-art Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering design for the base building structure, guided the design team in fulfilling the code requirements for non-structural elements, provided innovative bracing methodologies to reduce the cost of bracing ceilings and MEP equipment, and provided the design for the light gage and miscellaneous steel supporting architectural theming elements.
- To mitigate liquefaction, the site was treated with a gird of stone columns
- The casino is on a precast concrete barge floating inside an 8 ft. basin
- The basin sidewalls are design to absorb the impact from the barge
- The roof over the barge is supported on 4 columns on the basin slab and isolated from the barge structure.
