Tulane University, Howard Tilton Memorial Library Renovation and Addition

New Orleans, Louisiana

This project includes an addition of two new floors atop the library that extend above the canopy of the surrounding trees. The new fifth floor houses general collections, government documents, and the building’s new mechanical and electrical systems. The new sixth floor houses media, music, art, architecture, newspapers, micro-forms, and rare book collections. The new mechanical systems include high performance air filtering and temperature/humidity control.

Removal of the temporary systems installed and utilized since Katrina is included in the work. Installation of a new fire suppression system throughout the existing library includes a combination of two types: (a) a wet (water-based) system as the norm for most areas of the building and (b) a reaction system for the areas of the building that hold rare material.
